N/a‘an ku sê – How it all began
A short introduction and history on the N/a‘an ku sê
Dr Rudie and Marlice van Vuuren, with longtime friends Chris Heunis and Jan Verburg, started the N/a’an ku sê Foundation in 2006 to protect and improve the lives of the people and wildlife of Namibia.
Our vision is an Africa where humans and wildlife can live and thrive together. Our mission is to conserve the land, cultures and wildlife of Namibia and rescue species threatened by an ever-shrinking habitat”.
N/a’an ku sê runs a Wildlife Sanctuary and Carnivore Conservation Research project to protect and conserve Namibia's vulnerable wildlife as well as providing free education and healthcare to the San community.
We strive to create sustainable and long-term solutions in Namibia. It is our vision to play a pro-active role in nature conservation because we believe that we hold this invaluable heritage in
our trust for future generations of Africans. We cannot undo what has been done...
but we can shape our future.
We do not receive any government funding and are solely reliant on generous donations, ecotourism and the time of volunteers to continue our vital conservation work to help the people and animals of Namibia.
History on the N/a‘an ku sê Foundation and it‘s projects and properties
In 2003, we opened the Lifeline Clinic with friends, pharmacist Chris Heunis and Jan Verburg. It began as an outreach service where the doctors, Rudie and Chris, travelled to Epukiro (eastern Namibia) to treat sick patients who otherwise had no access to free healthcare, but since then has become a full time Clinic with a resident doctor and nurse.
In 2004, Marlice and Rudie bought the farm Ovuuyo, 42 km outside of Windhoek, Namibia, to establish their own animal reserve and 2007 they gave it the name N/a’an ku sê which means "God will protect us".
The N/a’an ku sê Charity Lodge & Wildlife Sanctuary opened in 2007, with all profits running straight back into the charitable projects, and being is up until today the only charity Lodge in Namibia.
We were delighted to have the support from the Clabile Trust to open our Clever Cubs Pre-Primary School in November 2009 on N/a’an ku sê. At the Clever Cubs, we provide a full curriculum including English, Maths, Art & Crafts, Sports and Environmental Studies to around 30 children.
In 2012, N/a’an ku sê purchased Neuras Wine and Wildlife Estate and continue the work for what Neuras has become renowned for, and stands for, making quality wine while conserving the land and wildlife of Neuras.
In 2014, N/a’an ku sê purchased the Kanaan N/a’an ku sê Desert Retreat in the south of Namibia. Kanaan is situated on 33.000 hectare of unspoiled land giving the N/a’an ku sê Team yet another area to continue and broaden conservation.
